Skills Assumptions - A DBT Skill

Understanding the Skills Assumptions DBT Skill for Personal Growth

The Skills Assumptions DBT Skill is a foundational part of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, guiding both therapists and clients through the process of change. While not scientifically proven, these assumptions serve as guiding beliefs that shape how we approach growth.

One core assumption is that people are always doing the best they can, no matter the situation. At the same time, they also want to improve their lives and find happiness. However, effort alone isn’t always enough, so people need to try harder, increase motivation, and push themselves further to create lasting change.

Another important belief is that while people may not have caused all of their problems, they are still responsible for solving them. Life can bring challenges that aren’t our fault, but it’s up to us to take control of our behaviors and environment to build the life we want. New behaviors must also be learned and practiced in real-life situations where they’re needed, not just in therapy.

All behaviors—whether actions, thoughts, or emotions—have causes. Instead of judging or blaming, DBT encourages us to understand the root causes and change the patterns that lead to unwanted behaviors. By following these skills assumptions, we can navigate the therapeutic journey with a mindset that fosters growth and transformation.
