DBT Skills Group Therapy
DBT Skills Groups for Multi-family, Adult, Teen
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) includes skills-based training in a group setting. In a DBT skills group, clients will learn and practice DBT tools to improve their ability to solve problems, cope with crises, manage interpersonal conflicts, and set and achieve goals in various areas of their lives
Where to Begin with DBT Skills Groups
DBT skills are helpful for everyone. Once you learn the skills you have them for your whole life.
Although it was originally developed to help people who are struggling with suicide, DBT has been shown to be an effective treatment for a number of issues including: anxiety, depression, addiction, anger, impulsivity, and relationship problems, interpersonal isolation, and ineffectiveness at work.
DBT skills groups
consist of four modules:
- Mindfulness skills
- Distress tolerance skills
- Emotion regulation skills
- Interpersonal effectiveness skills
Advanced DBT Skills Groups
For individuals that have already completed a DBT Skills Group and want to take their skills to the next level, our Advanced DBT Skills Group enables individuals to continue reinforcing these previously learned skills. Clients will also learn a variety of new DBT skills to further their knowledge.
The Advanced DBT Skills Groups also differs from traditional skills groups in that they function as a hybrid skills group and process group. Some time will be spent drawing on skills from DBT, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), mindfulness, the works of Tara Brach, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Marsha Linehan, Jack Kornfield,Thich Nhat Hanh, Adyashanti, Donald Altman, Michael Singer, and Brene Brown, among others. Additionally, time will be spent on traditional (Yalom) process group techniques to allow clients to experience support and interactions in a safe, supportive environment.

Within a DBT Skills Group, participants are introduced to four main modules, each designed to address specific aspects of emotional and interpersonal challenges. These modules form the foundation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), providing individuals with an all-inclusive toolkit for managing intense emotions, navigating social interactions, and encouraging mindfulness.
- Mindfulness: The foundation of all DBT skills, mindfulness focuses on improving an individual's ability to accept and be present in the current moment.

- Emotion Regulation: This module addresses how to identify, understand, and manage emotional responses effectively.

A DBT Skills Group is a vital component of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), designed to teach individuals a set of behavioral skills for managing emotional distress, improving interpersonal relationships, and creating mindfulness and acceptance.
Structured more like a class than a traditional therapy session, a DBT Skills Group will typically meet once a week for several hours for at least six months. Participants learn and practice four core modules:
- Mindfulness
- Distress Tolerance
- Emotion Regulation
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
The confidential and welcoming group setting at the Counseling Center Group provides a supportive environment where participants can learn from each other’s experiences and receive feedback on their use of the skills. Engaging in a DBT Skills Group Group offers a structured approach to learning and applying critical life skills that can lead to significant improvements in managing challenging emotional states and behaviors associated with various mental health conditions.
The online DBT skills group works by bringing together individuals in a virtual setting to learn and practice DBT skills, facilitated by our trained DBT therapists. This format allows participants to join sessions from the comfort of their own homes, by using video conferencing tools such as Zoom, to interact in real-time.
The group will continue to run as an in-person group would, and will still cover the four core modules of DBT: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Each session is structured to include both teaching and discussion, allowing participants to learn new coping strategies and apply them to their daily lives.
