About Depression

Depression is a common but serious mood disorder that can sap you of energy, cause you to lose interest in activities that you once enjoyed, and lead to persistent sadness or lack of desire to participate in life.

It can be difficult to distinguish between general experiences of sadness and more serious depressive conditions, which is why it’s important to seek professional help if you notice marked negative changes in your mood.

Depression FAQ's

Depression is more severe and persistent than the transient feeling of sadness that everyone experiences from time to time. Involves a range of symptoms such as a deep sense of hopelessness, changes in sleep and appetite, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, and difficulties in concentrating. These symptoms last for weeks, months, or even longer and can significantly impair a person’s ability to function at work, school, or in social situations. Unlike normal sadness, depression may require professional treatment to manage.

DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is particularly effective for treating depression by focusing on the development of coping skills that manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. Its core components—mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—equip individuals with the tools to handle emotional triggers in a healthier way, thus reducing depressive symptoms. By improving emotional and interpersonal skills, DBT helps individuals build a life worth living, which is especially beneficial for those with chronic depression.
