Paired Muscle Relaxation - A DBT Skill
Find Calm with Paired Muscle Relaxation DBT Skill
In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), TIP skills help reduce intense emotions quickly by activating your parasympathetic nervous system to calm the body. One key technique is the Paired Muscle Relaxation DBT Skill, which pairs muscle tension with breathing exercises to help you find calm during emotional distress.
To practice the Paired Muscle Relaxation DBT Skill, start by breathing deeply into your belly and gently tensing your muscles. As you exhale, silently say the word “relax” and release the tension. Notice how your body feels as the tension melts away. This connection between your breath and muscle relaxation helps reduce emotional arousal quickly.
When first starting, it’s best to practice in a quiet space, but as you improve, try using the Paired Muscle Relaxation DBT Skill in different environments. Consistent practice makes this skill more effective, so when you face overwhelming emotions, you can easily tap into it. If anxious thoughts arise, focus on your breath—inhale for a count of 5 and exhale for 7—to bring yourself back to a place of relaxation.
Now, let’s try it together. Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down, and loosen any tight clothing. For each body part, tighten the muscles as you inhale, hold for 5-6 seconds, and then exhale while thinking “relax” as you release the tension. Regular practice will help you stay grounded and emotionally regulated in challenging moments.
