Doing Mind vs. Being Mind - A DBT Skill

Finding Balance: Mastering the Doing Mind vs. Being Mind Skill

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the concept of Doing Mind vs. Being Mind is a valuable skill for maintaining balance in our everyday lives. These two states of mind—doing and being—can significantly influence how we approach tasks, goals, and the present moment. While each serves its purpose, leaning too much into one or the other can create challenges.

Let’s start with Doing Mind. This is a task-focused mindset that thrives on ambition and productivity, helping us meet goals and plan for the future. However, over-relying on this state can lead to living on autopilot, where life becomes a series of routines and checklists. Those stuck in Doing Mind, like workaholics, often feel pressured to stay productive, losing touch with the present moment.

On the flip side, we have Being Mind. This focuses on experiencing the present moment without concern for tasks or outcomes, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in life. It helps us let go of judgment and simply “be,” but too much of it can lead to neglecting responsibilities. Without balancing action, we may fall behind on important tasks like paying bills or planning ahead.

The real challenge is finding a balance between these two mindsets. Wise Mind is the balanced integration of Doing and Being Mind, combining their strengths for intentional and skillful action. It helps us pursue our goals while staying mindful of the present moment. In Wise Mind, we release the constant need for productivity, focusing on what truly matters in life.

By practicing the Doing Mind vs. Being Mind DBT skill, you’ll learn to shift between these states as needed, ultimately fostering greater balance and fulfillment in your life.
