Building Mastery means challenging ourselves with tasks that are a little bit difficult but still achievable. These tasks help us grow a sense of competence and empowerment, which boosts self-esteem and happiness over time. As we succeed in these tasks, we begin to see ourselves as more capable, which helps us resist feelings of depression and other tough emotions. In essence, this DBT skill helps us become more resilient.
It’s a good idea to always have a Building Mastery project in your life. Pick something that’s not impossible, but not too easy either—something that’s challenging enough to push you a little. As you improve, you can gradually increase the difficulty. Some examples of Building Mastery projects might be training for a 5K, learning to knit, writing a book, tackling a complicated puzzle, or even learning to cook a new recipe.
